Content creation doesn’t have to be tedious.

I’ve heard many times before from folks who play an admin role on a social media account that it can be tedious, tiresome, and overwhelming to create content.

While I believe it can take time to get into a rhythm of consistent sharing, I don’t believe that creating content for your social media or website should feel tedious.

I’ve managed many different social media accounts and websites over the years, some with smaller followings and some with thousands of followers. One thing remained the same whenever I was tasked with creating content: I was there to interact, not broadcast.

There are oodles of best practices and tips for creating content online. (Be aware that some are filled with trendy lingo, click bait, and money grabs instead of considerate knowledge sharing).

Today, I want to share with you things to keep in mind before you ever take pen to paper (or keyboard to screen, or fingertip to your phone). These are some of the guiding philosophies I keep rattling around in my head each time I create content for a business. I use these as checkpoints whether I’m creating a social post, web page, poster or a logo. These guide me through all content creation, online or offline.

You know when you get a song stuck in your head after walking around the grocery store, but you’re okay with it because it was at least a good song and now you have a good song in your head and new snacks? Let’s hope these small tips will stick in your mind too. And, let’s also hope you brought snacks.

Make it Meaningful

When the ideas aren’t coming easily or writing feels about as easy as herding cats, start with what’s meaningful. Start your thought process from a place of honesty. Who are you? What do you do? What skills and processes make up what you do or what you make? Don’t get me wrong, a relatable and appropriate meme is always fun to share, but let those be the sprinkles, not your favourite ice cream. (I told you, I hope you brought snacks).

Let Your Personality Show

Every business should have a unique personality. A voice, a moral compass, a particular type of humour, and a style. Think about all the elements that go into making up your personality. I’m sure there are too many things to list. Now, think about your business in the same way. Determine what personality traits define your business and let the personality shine in your content.

Be Passionate

On the hectic or tough days, it’s easy to forget what you’re passionate about in your business and work. Find the fizz and keep in mind those things that light a fire in you and make you excited to talk about your business. Share that passion. Let you customers share in the fizzy feelings with you. Passionate customers turn into fans of your business. And, fans always show up.

Be Consistent

Consistency is the perfect seasoning for your main dish, the message. It just makes everything pop. I don’t just mean sticking to your blog schedule or social media content calendar (also great, but not what we’re talking about here). Telling your own story that you know better than anyone else will help to create consistency in your message. A consistent personality, voice, and well of source material will always combine beautifully.

Meaningful content won’t feel tedious.

When you share your story authentically, it automatically differentiates you from other businesses. Showcase the personality of your business with meaningful, consistent messages that are relevant to your customers.
